Bravo! I whole heartedly concur with the spirit of the author's point. WW2 was fought for liberty, the same liberty that people enjoy when wading into the pool. This doesn't mean people should be cracking beers at the water's edge, but life is meant to be lived, not just commemorated.
The Vietnam memorial was about healing the returning soldiers and their nation, as opposed to the WW2 memorial, which is about celebrating the (temporary) defeat of evil. Two completely different purposes with two different memorials. We have way too many rules for the capital of freedom. I think those who gave their lives in WW2 would love the thought of their grand children playing in the memorial pool while the grandparents stand in quite reflection.
