I too fail to see what the big deal is. Especially when its built to look like it is.
It's a memorial that celebrates a victory. There are other memorials around town that mourn losses. The difference is made apparent through design.
Beyond that, if you really want to learn about the costs in WWII there are a bunch of museums right down the street that will go into horrible detail about what that war was about.
